Embedded Intelligence
Microcontroller enable the integration of functional Intelligence into mechatronic systems. Sensors and actuators become smart. They have knowledge about themselves and their environment. They can react intelligently to changes and are able to cooperate with other entities to perform a control task. Research is being done in the areas of hard-, soft- and middleware solutions for (near-)real-time applications in wireless and wired sensor/actuator networks.

Complex measuring tasks with hybrid sensor systems
In the area of sensor technology hybrid systems open new ways of measurement and control. The research here is focussing on designing hybrid systems using common sensor principles and developing strategies and concepts for fast fusion of the sensor data.

  Telemanipulation of mechatronic systems
Telemanipulation facilitates the geographical separation of machine and operator. The human, for example, can navigate and operate a system which is working in a for a human unreachable or even hazardous environment. This researches goal is to combine modern communication and visualization technologies with multimedia I/O to improve intuitiveness in control and programming of the system.

    Telecooperation
"Together we are strong" Nowadays' engineering tasks are often so complex, that they can only be handled in a team. To support this teamwork intelligent soft- and hardware tools are necessary. They allow cooperation of detached team members at different locations. Our research goal is the development of intelligent and intuitive tools, such as web-services, adequate semantic concepts, suitable interaction mechanisms and modern communication and visualization technologies.

Simulation
Simulation techniques allow to verify process flows, system behaviour and machine commands using virtual models before they are being applied to a real system. An interesting and promising area of research is using simulation for precognition and decision support for control tasks considering interaction between human, machine and environment.

Cooperation of decentralized systems
Linking of so far autonomously operating systems is going to enable cooperation towards a common goal. This kind of collective work requires short communication paths, concerted actions, and the availability of mechanisms for planning, decision making and control.
